The essential guide to stretching canvas art

It's always important to wear the right underwear, it makes your outfit look so much better!

Stretching a piece of canvas art needs the same invisible support in order to look stunning on your wall. It all seems so simple right? How many times do we hear the statement, 'But it's just four pieces of wood....' Well, in essence it is, but those 'four pieces of wood' need to be a little bit special.

Nothing looks as bad as a canvas that has gone baggy and is looking sad and floppy on the wall,  unless it's the wood frame or stretcher bars having twisted whilst it's hanging and now only the opposite corners touch the wall at the same time.

All of our stretcher bars are custom sized so that all of the image is showing as it should. It's carefully measured down to the millimeter with the salvage and set of the image taken into consideration. Once we are sure of the appropriate size for your stretcher, it is ordered up especially for your artwork.

Once the four custom sized bars and wedges are delivered into the gallery, they are unpacked and checked. Each bar has a bevelled edge which prevents the bars making an imprint of the front of your artwork. The ends of each bar have slots which are used to construct the frame and make a seamless fit. They are made from a high quality softwood to prevent twisting from occurring. With larger canvases there will be extra support bars giving 'windows' to the construction. This gives more support to the finished artwork and allows us to put the correct tension into the stretching process without affecting or damaging, the corners.

After constructing the stretcher bars into a frame, ensuring that it is square ( no one wants to see a piece of artwork bigger at one end than the other!), the canvas is positioned onto the bars and adjusted so that the image is aligned correctly. We then begin to pull and staple the canvas onto the reverse of the stretcher bars so that they aren't visible. When we are happy that the canvas is taut on the bars, we put hardwood wedges into each corner of the stretcher bar. These are gently tapped to give the final tension to the canvas.

And.....voila! The undergarment for your canvas artwork is complete allowing the artwork to shine!
